Did you know that “Comparison kills spiritual growth?” Each one of us has a “me” that we think we should be, and unfortunately we then live in the shadow of that comparison, instead of living in the life that God has in mind.
Henri Nouwen said, “Spiritual greatness has nothing to do with being greater than others. It has everything to do with being as great as each of us can be.”
And comparison with other nations was one of Israel’s distractions as well.
1 Samuel 8:6-21 “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.” …But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”
The people of Israel didn’t want the life that God had for them, they wanted to follow the ways of the world. The other nations had a King, so they wanted a king to.
Jesus says in a parable Mark 4:18-19 There are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
Jesus says the distractions of life, can actually choke… your life.
The distractions in our life need to be examined an reevaluated don’t they? God has a life for you, a purpose for you. A life of blessing and a life of flourishing and sadly we allow so much else to distract us from what matters most.
But we’re not the only ones, we even allow other people to distract us to.
Your boss want you to be more successful
Your health club wants you to be more fit
Your credit card company wants you to be more in debt
The networks want you to watch their shows
The restaurants want you to eat their food
The teachers at your kids school want you to make the snacks
and your dentist is begging you to floss!
Everybody has their own agenda …. for your life! And not only do we have our own unobtainable agendas, but we allow others to add their distractions as well.
Could I spend my entire life just trying to be someone else’s version of me?
Yea, I could.
Begin the practice of tuning the world down and turning God up.
Close the door on the kings of this world and begin to follow the true King of Heaven.
