Great word picture, David! To have more light on the path, keep walking. Thanks for that imagery illuminating (no pun intended) the Scripture.

I think it's a crying shame that Chambers received criticism for this. Regardless of what you believe about the legitimacy of homosexual relationships, the fact remains that there are gay people and as long as they are human, they are not excluded from the grace and love of Christ.

Besides, when did it become our job to figure out who's in and who's out!? It's our job to sharpen one another, to share in community with one another, and to love one another, bearing the image of God our creator. So Chambers did nothing more or less than what should be the standard for followers of Jesus Christ. Good for him. The GCN, however, was brave to invite such a potentially hostile voice into their midst. I've had a few conversations with Exodus International folks and they're not always well received by the gay community. What the GCN did by inviting Chambers is a refreshing image!

If by "corporation" you mean "collective" and if by "hierarchical" you mean "organized" - I think by definition you can't escape it. Jesus established a church (Matt 16:18) and the word itself means a plurality of people (i,e, corporation) and you can't have a group function healthily without rules and leaders (just like in a family, your house has rules and you and your husband are the leaders) Wayne Jacobson talks of unknowns and offers no real answers. He's chasing Moby Dick. I think of it like this.... the church that exists, is the one God wants, because it's the one that we have, and everything is subject to his will.

BAM! You've just been Calvined!

"never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line..." but I digress.

I did read the other post, but assumed you were still talking about leaving one local corporate body with some form of hierarchical structure of leadership for another. I am talking about relational church similarly to what Wayne Jacobsen talks about here: http://www.lifestream.org/bodylife.php?blid=32

But let's talk about the difference of leaving "a" church and leaving the church system. There is a vast difference. As you say, the church is people, not the building, so, how would it look to walk away from the incorporated model, but still gather with believers and be deeply connected to Christ's example of discipleship? Why does that idea scare people/pastors/whoever? Is it because it is unknown?

My fear is that walking away from the corporate Americanized model of church will be more difficult. I will need to walk in the Spirit more and rely on other believers more deeply because currently the system tells me when and where and how much to be a follower of Jesus. It seems pretentious. And, honestly, pretentious ways of life fit my nature much better than organic reality where I have to try harder to be real. His yolk is easy and His burden light, but i think we exchanged Jesus' yolk for a polyester necktie a long time ago...and a cassock before that perhaps.
